Figlia di un pastore, viene battezzata il 26 marzo 1633 a Barrow (Suffolk). Si forma in un ambiente di pittori amatoriali. Nel 1652 sposa Charles Beale, pittore e fabbricante di colori. Si specializza nel ritratto, dipingendo a olio e acquerello, ed esegue disegni a matita. Intorno al 1655-1656 i Beale si trasferiscono a Londra. Nel 1658 il marito Charles è nominato “Deputy-Clerk” al Patents Office e i Beale si trasferiscono a Hind Court, nella parrocchia di St Dunstan-in the-West, dove rimangono fino al 1665. Qui i coniugi allestiscono una “paynting roome” dove ritraggono e frequentano la loro cerchia di amici. Intorno al 1659-1660 Mary esegue il primo Autoritratto con marito e figlio (Londra, Geffrye Museum). Nel 1663 scrive le Osservazione su come dipingere le albicocche (Observations by MB in her painting of Apricots in August 1663’, in Charles Beale, Experimentall Seacrets found out in the way of painting (1647/8–1663), Glasgow University Library, Special Collections, MS Ferguson 134). Nel 1665, probabilmente a causa di difficoltà nel lavoro del marito, i Beale si ritirano per cinque anni ad Allbrook, nella campagna del Hampshire. Qui esegue l’Autoritratto (Londra, National Portrait Gallery) intorno al 1666. Nello stesso anno Mary scrive il Discourse on Friendship (British Library, MS Harl. 6828, ff. 510–23). . Intorno al 1670-1671 i Beale ritornano a Londra, a Pall Mall, e qui Mary organizza uno studio ed intraprende la carriera da professionista. Nei suoi ritratti è assistita dal figlio Charles Beale II, che dipinge sfondi e panneggi. Anche Thomas Monby dipinge le parti di paesaggio. Viene sepolta l’8 ottobre 1699
